CPA Requirements by State

The CPA exam is mandated by the state Board of Accountancy, therefore, your requirements for the CPA exam varies from state to state.  Most states have the same general requirements, but the education and work experience may differ slightly.  To be sure you are meeting all of the requirements set forth by your state, be sure to look at your state’s Board of Accountancy to determine your specific requirements.  Some of the CPA requirements by state are as follows:

California

California requires that you have 120 total semester hours, 24 of which must be in accounting, and 24 in business related courses for pathway 1.  150 semester hours are required for pathway 2.  You must have a bachelor’s degree.

Texas

Texas requires that you must complete 150 semester units and have a bachelor’s degree.  It is also required that you have at least 30 upper division semester units of accounting, as well as 21 upper division semester units of related business courses, and 3 semester units of ethics. Candidates must also submit 2 passport style photographs as well as a background check to qualify.  The above requirements are the CPA requirements by state (Texas).

New York

150 semester hours are also required to sit for the CPA exam in New York, as well as a bachelor’s degree.  33 semester units of accounting are required, as well as additional coursework.  If you have 15 years of experience, you may sit for the exam without having your degree.  You also must be 21 years of age as a CPA requirement by state (New York).

Florida

In order to take the CPA exam in the state of Florida, you must complete 150 semester hours and receive a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, plus 20 semester hours.  It is also required that 36 semester hours in upper level accounting, as well as 39 hours in business related courses, 6 of which must be in business law.
